  • Inside-out:
    • In your area of expertise, what's a topic that fascinates you?
    • What topic do you enjoy explaining to others?
    • Where do you have a ton of content that you've already written/spoken about?

Define your course topic

Spiky Point of View

Ideal student

What's the "vibe" of your ideal student?

  • What do they call themselves (e.g. title, role, identity)?
  • What do they care about?
  • What communities do they hang out in (online & in person)?
  • Who do they apsire to be like in their industry?

What pain points are your ideal students facing today?

  • You are sick of...
  • You're losing sleep over...
  • You're frustrated by...

Where do they want to be?

  • You secretly wish you could...
  • You daydream about...
  • You want ... to be different

Who is your course not for?

  • This course is not for you if you're «role/title/level»
  • This course will not cover «problem»
  • This course will not cover «outcome»

Put it together:

  • Role + desire: "«Role» who wants to «achieve desired outcome»"
  • Role + pain point: "«Role» who struggles with «pain point»"
  • Who it's not for: "This course is not for you if..."

Key outcomes

Brainstorm 3+ key outcomes.

"How to «action word» so you can «achieve outcome». You'll leave with «output/takeaway»".

Narrow your topic using the following questions:

  • Which one of these concepts/skills are students most likely to pay for and eager to solve?
  • Which one do you have the most existing content/assets on? (e.g. lecture content, videos, writing, ceaching/consulting experience)
  • If you had to teach a 1-day course on just one of these topics, which one would you pick?

What would you do if your course were...

  • ...100% no slides?
  • ...100% guests?
  • ...100% curated content?
