Ego depletion

In order to adhere to social norms, to live healthily or to focus on a specific task, we often have to delay gratification on our urges, desires and natural tendencies. Ego depletion happens when people use up their available willpower on one task. As a result, they are unable to exert the necessary level of self-control on subsequent tasks.

Preventing ego depletion

  • Improve your mood. Start from a high point.
  • Change your outlook. Fight the self-fulfilling prophecy.
  • Think about what matters to you. Find your intrinsic motivation.
  • Prioritise sleep. Sleep resets self-control.
  • Practice stress management. Resolve the root cause.
