Audience- and goal-oriented structure

Consider a three-act structure:

  • Beginning (ask an important question, frame your topic)
  • Middle (expand, explain, illuminate)
  • Ending (declare your conclusion, alternatively: repeat the Beginning)

Beginning

  • Hook (e.g. important question, goal)
  • Empathize with the audience
  • Assert authority (can also be derived from the authority of others, e.g. best-selling authors)
  • Problem statement - what this solves for myself or the audience
  • Mention the main takeaways in advance

Middle

  • Guide: List of step-by-step instructions
  • Opinion: List of supporting points
  • Teaching: List of takeaways that get sign-posted in advance

Ending

  • Recap of the process
  • Final thoughts or additional tips
  • Call to action (e.g., encourage the audience to try the steps, and share their results/feedback)
