E-Car Retrospective

The E-Car Retrospective is a coaching method that correlates two aspects:

  • What is accelerating you? What is slowing you down?
  • What is costing you energy? What is giving you energy back?

With an electric car, accelerating usually takes energy from the battery. But when we're rolling downhill, we get faster and actually gain energy back. We'll still have to use a charging station periodically.

It's similar for us and our work. Usually, we need to put in effort which will drain our battery. At other times, success and positive feedback boosts us. And sometimes, we simply need to stop and recharge.

In practice, the method works like this:

In advance of the coaching session, gather talking points on a grid of four quadrants between the axes of "acceleration/deceleration" and "costing/giving energy". I've named the four quadrants like this:

  • CHARGING: slowed down but gained energy
  • BOOSTING: made headway and gained energy
  • CRUISING: spent energy to keep up speed
  • DRAINING: slowed down and spent energy

During the session, we'll discuss each talking point, why it's in its respective quadrant, and how we're going to respond to it.
